Obagi Blue Peel. What Is It?

Obagi Blue Peel is produced by the Obagi company and founded by a dermatologist. The blue peel uses Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) in the strength of about 15%. This percentage can vary depending on the strength of peel desired. It is used for light and medium peels for skin tightening, wrinkles, especially around the mouth, scars, blemishes, uneven skin tone and color, improving texture and skin smoothness. It is one of the milder chemical peels and the procedure exfoliates the outer layers of damaged skin revealing a new smoother more youthful layer of skin underneath.

One of the most common results of sun damage is dyschromia, another name for hyperpigmentation or skin discoloration, causing some areas of the skin to appear darker than the surrounding area. The skin makes pigment to help protect it from UV rays and as time goes on imperfections in the skins pigment are created that we see as age spots, liver and sun spots and other skin imperfections of a dark nature. These spots are one of the major reasons why people have chemical peels. Depending on how deep these discolorations are will depend on how much of the pigmentation can be removed by a chemical peel. Just be aware that some of the deeper pigmentation damage might not be corrected.

The type of skin and complexion and the depth of the peel will determine the possible complications the patient may have as a result. These complications may be any of the following: pain, discoloration, scarring, uneven skin color, cold sores, longer healing time, and peeling. All chemical peels lighten the skin.

The Obagi Blue Peel is famous for its blue peel color. A blue color is added to the chemical to give the doctor more control and better visibility when applying the peel. It also enables him to see where and how evenly the solution is being applied. The blue color also gives him the capability to see the depth of the peel during the procedure. Both the evenness of application and the visibility of the depth are factors that reduce your risk of scarring, discoloration, and darkening of the skin after the process is completed.

There can be a burning sensation when the chemical is applied but most patients do not require anesthesia. In some cases however, if the patient prefers, a topical anesthesia is given for the pain.

The Obagi Blue Peel does have a down time of recuperation of 5 to 10 days.

The cost of the Obagi Blue Peel can be anywhere from $1,500 to $3,500. br>
